Santa Elena is an inland village in Yucatán's Puuc region, part of the cultural landscape that includes the nearby archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabáh. This is not a beach destination, and it isn't trying to be — it's a real, rural Maya and Yucatecan community, and that's the entire point for the people who choose it.
Every other destination on this site sits on or near the coast. Santa Elena is the exception: inland, dry, rural, and built around living culture rather than sand and surf.
